Green Technology – Prokriti O Jibhon

Enhancement of science and technology, along with evolving civilization, has led human civilization to the peak of progress. Since Industrial Revolution human living standards have been changing rapidly. To meet the demand of growing population throughout the world, pressure on natural resources have increased. Though industrialization and urbanization have brought massive changes in modern life, human activities are negatively impacting the environment.

Global warming, climate change, excessive use of natural resources, deforestation, various pollution, etc. are increasingly pushing the natural environment towards destruction. Biodiversity and human civilization are being threatened. So, to keep the Earth inhabitable, we need different environment friendly technologies, also known as Green Technology.

Electricity is one of the discoveries of human civilization. In Bangladesh, electricity is produced mainly using coal, oil and natural gas which are quite expensive. Besides, such natural resources are also quite limited. Generating electricity using these natural resources also pollutes the environment. Here, it is possible to meet the electricity demand using solar power, wind power and hydro power.

Generating electricity using environment friendly technology will not only reduce non-renewable fossil fuel usage, but also save environment from pollution. Use of traditional stove for cooking is still common in our country. These stoves require burning wood and emit black smoke that harms human health and environment. So, instead of the traditional ovens, we have to increase usage of environment friendly stoves. Using electric stoves, eco-friendly Bondhu Chula or Biogas stove will reduce black smoke production.

In tackling global climate change impacts, environment friendly housing can play an important role. Using environment friendly building materials reduces harm to environment, as well as construction cost. Increasing use of stone instead of bricks in multistoried construction, using recyclable materials and ingredients in home construction, creating rooftop & balcony garden can add to visual charm as well as help environment. Bangladesh still has traditional brick kilns, using huge amount of wood for burning bricks. These brick kilns are polluting environment as well as increasing tree felling for firewood. So, establishing modern brick kilns with eco-friendly technology can reduce environmental pollution to a great extent.

Most of our huge volume of regular use polythene and plastic products are thrown away after a single use. These non-degradable wastes end up in various drain, sewer, pond, lake, river and ocean. So, polythene and plastic are causing water logging, water pollution as well as severe environmental damage. Also burning polythene and plastic cause air pollution, which is harmful for all plants and animals including humans.

So, environment friendly technology is vital in preventing plastic pollution. We can free environment from plastic pollution by recycling plastic, increasing use of environment friendly biodegradable products, like paper, jute bags and the like.

Global climate is rapidly changing due to deforestation, unplanned urbanization, industrialization, pollution, etc. Coastal countries, including Bangladesh, are becoming the worst victims of climate change. People’s life and livelihood are suffering the harmful effects. Nature and biodiversity are being endangered. Here, innovation and expansion of environment friendly technologies can ensure sustainable development. It is necessary to reduce environment pollution by increasing usage of various environment friendly technologies, including Solar Power, Wind Power, Biogas Plant, setting up ETP in industry, plastic recycling and modern brick kilns.

Sustainable development can be accelerated by taking development initiatives with planned infrastructure development, sustainable usage of natural resources and increasing public awareness. Which would ensure a beautiful and habitable Earth for future generations.
